Nothing can really prepare you for it. If you've been there, you know what I mean. I think the second it came into view my jaw dropped. It's notorious the world around. The subject of many photos, and films, I thought I knew what I would be laying my eyes on. I was wrong.
Of course I am talking about the Grand Canyon, and Grand it is. Weighing in at 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide, and depths of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters). The sheer size is overwhelming. In fact the canyon is so large, it is difficult to properly capture. This particular panoramic actually consists of 6 separate photos stitched together!
Still, this isn't exactly why my jaw dropped. There was one aspect I wasn't expecting. Over a course of millions of years, the Colorado River has exposed nearly 2 billion years of well preserved geology. These layers of rock, sediment, and minerals tell a story of our Earth's history. History written in lines, of some of the most dazzling colours I have seen in a landscape!
There was something else I wasn't necessarily expecting either, snow. Living in Canada, I typically get more than enough snow in my life. Being as uninformed as I am, I was a bit shocked to find it in Arizona. As it turns out this isn't really as rare as one might think it would be. The area sees an average of 50, and upwards to 100 inches a year! I was more than happy to use it as a part of my images. The white really cleanses the pallet, so to speak, and helps to pop the astonishing colours of the canyon.
