Larch Madness. The term used to describe the throngs of sightseers, who set out to prospect a wondrous gold rush. Pumpkin spice lattes in hand, setting out eager to collect the riches of Mother Nature’s Midas touch. I was right alongside them, to stake a claim for myself.
The destination is Larch Valley Trail, which can be accessed via Moraine Lake. A well travelled path, which is scored as a moderate hike on the AllTrails app. You will travel approximately 8.9km, and see an elevation change of about 607 meters. I recommend you pack accordingly. Under dress for the climb, but pack warmer clothes for arrival at the top. Once you arrive you will be mesmerized by the views, and it tends to cool off as you stop to properly enjoy them!
What is a larch? A larch tree is unique in the aspect that it has needles, not unlike a pine tree, rather than leaves. Even more unique in the fact that they are a deciduous tree. Meaning the needles turn yellow in autumn, and fall off over winter. A simple, but beautiful distinction, which lures photographers and sightseers alike.
It’s not hard to imagine why people go mad, over views as priceless as this.
